Caring for your Stemwinder Sculpture
As we all know, many things in life require maintenance. Some we can not avoid and some we accept by choice. I feel life is short and there are much more enjoyable things to do with our time than repeatedly "fixing things". Any sculpture you may purchase here is created with that in mind. Most of the pieces are constructed from heavy steel and/or stone. Special attention is given at all attachments. Usually seal welded at steel to steel connections to prevent rust bleeding. Stone attachments are typically pinned and epoxied with industrial grade materials. I am very content with the appearance of the patina this steel assumes. Many of my pieces do not have any treatment or coatings, however, there are some techniques that can be applied for longevity. One of the few I actually perform is to apply a coating of boiled linseed oil to the steel. This will protect the steel from the elements and will add a dark luster that is easy on the eyes. Actually, I find that the act of applying the oil can provide time to bond with the piece, one may even call it intimate. The proces is quite simple, apply the oil with a rag, let it soak in and wipe down with a clean rag. This should last for a year, maybe more.
